Pompeii is perhaps the most famous archaelogical site on the globe. It was a thriving, prosperous city near Neapolis (modernday Naples,) and grew rather large and wealthy. Nearby Vesuvius errupted in AD79, covering the city in ash and lava, and it was not rediscovered until the nineteenth century. It is extremely well preserved. Click to enlarge.
