Who is this site named after?

John Bull is not a real person, nor ever has been. John Bull was in the nineteenth century and the first part of the twentieth the journalistic representation of the United Kingdom, though nowadays he has been largely superceded by John Smith, originally the representation of the working class. John Bull featured heavily in publications such as Punch, and still does in magazines like Private Eye. Occaisonally John Bull features in newspapers when they are in a fit of patriotism. He is easily recognisable, and resembles a nineteenth century industrialist. he is often seen wearing a Union Flag bowler hat. John Bull is to Britain what Marianne is to France or Uncle Sam to America. Being fierely patriotic, I thought that a suitable name for my site would be what was originally deemed to be the epitamy of what being British was all about. Hence, the John Bull Library. Below is a typical cartoon from Punch, featuring John Bull.
